UL94 combustion tester is a kind of equipment used to test the combustion performance of materials, especially plastics and wires and cables, etc. It is mainly evaluated according to the UL94 standard, which is formulated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for evaluating the self-extinguishing, flame spreading and fire-resistant performance of the materials in a fire environment. UL94 testers are commonly used to test the flame retardancy of plastics, electronics, fiber optics, automotive parts, and wires and cables.
1. UL94 standard introduction
UL94 standard mainly includes the following different combustion levels:
- V-0: The material is capable of extinguishing quickly after the source of ignition is removed, and dripping molten material will not cause a fire.
- V-1: The material is capable of extinguishing quickly after removal of the ignition source and dripping melt will not cause a fire, but can have a lesser burn duration.
- V-2: Similar to V-1, but dripping melt may cause a fire.
- HB: The material is capable of burning in a horizontal position for a certain period of time, but at a slower rate.
- 5VA and 5VB: These two tests are more demanding and are mainly used to evaluate highly flame retardant materials.
2. Equipment function and role
The main function of UL94 combustion tester is to simulate the role of the fire source in the actual use of the environment to test the performance of the material under the influence of flame. The role of the equipment includes:
- Test the self-extinguishing nature of the material: to assess whether the material is able to self-extinguish after removing the source of ignition.
- Evaluating flame spreadability: Tests the rate of flame spread on the surface or within the material.
- Smoke test: To observe whether the material produces a large amount of toxic smoke during combustion.
3. UL94 combustion tester working principle
UL94 combustion tester usually includes the following basic functions:
- Fire source settings: According to different test requirements, the tester can adjust the size of the fire source and application time.
- Sample fixture: the specimen is fixed by a special fixture to ensure that it is in the specified position to accept the role of the fire source.
- Time Control: During the test, the flame burning time is recorded to assess the burning characteristics of the material.
- Extinguishing Function: After removing the source of ignition, observe whether the sample is able to self-extinguish or continue to burn.
- Data Acquisition: Record the flame spreading speed, burning time, molten drop situation and other parameters.
4. UL94 Combustion Tester Test Methods

Vertical Combustion Test (UL94-V): In this test method, the specimen is placed vertically and the ignition source ignites the bottom end of the material and the combustion process is recorded.
- V-0: After the source of ignition is removed, the material extinguishes within 10 seconds and the molten drop does not start a fire.
- V-1: After removal of the ignition source, the material is extinguished within 30 seconds and the droplets may start a fire.
- V-2: The material is extinguished within 30 seconds after removal of the ignition source and the droplets may cause a fire.

Horizontal Burning Test (UL94-HB): This test method is used to evaluate the burning rate of a material in a horizontal position and is applicable to larger or irregularly shaped specimens.
5. Equipment Composition
UL94 combustion tester usually consists of the following main parts:
- Specimen holder: Used to hold the specimen in place and ensure its stability.
- Fire source device: common fire source gas burner, the intensity and duration of the flame can be adjusted.
- Control System: Used to set the combustion time, flame height and other test parameters.
